Large timespans kill UI performance
Reported by Jonathan Lister | October 7th, 2010 @ 11:13 AM
We have a fixed n pixel = 1 minute x-axis, which means that a day's worth of time makes a container div of circa 10k pixels wide. This makes scrolling perform badly.

Having talked about this, agreed to bump rethinking rendering methods to 1.0; in the mean-time, going to choose the x_increments after the first poll to ensure that old data is visible when it loads. See #114.

Having thought some more about the general challenge of smoothly rendering a wide, scrollable heatmap, containing many dots, I think the best solution looks like this:
From having looked at the SIMILE project, it's clear that a really wide DIV can be moved left and right with minimal performance impact. So the trick is to isolate the affect of including SVG in the equation.
Alternative 1.
i. the blobs are absolutely positioned div's with PNG's or GIF's in them
ii. the hover and click effects are different imagesAlternative 2.
i. the heatmap never grows beyond the viewport (perhaps with up to the same size hidden to allow for a buffer)
ii. the blobs are absolutely positioned svg elements
iii. the hover effect is svg
iv. the scrolling moves the blobs not the container
v. blobs that are not displayed are loaded onto the display as they are needed due to scrollingThe possible performance bottleneck is the simultaneous moving of many blobs.

Just for my info - you're not actually working on this for 0.8, right? This is just something that occurred to you and you've (correctly) made a note of this?

- State changed from new to duplicate
I'm invalidating this because the rendering has been completely refactored as part of #213 and hence this is a dupe.
