Integration test for config application

Recent bugs have demonstrated the need to build an integration test to verify the full stack behavior when dealing with:

  • Shorthand configurations, e.g. when bounds are left half open or completely open in categories and views (see #408)
  • Bogus configurations, e.g. when attributes are deliberately mangled (see #400)
